The banyan tree, which was about a century old, fell on 3-4 huts in a slum colony at Khadiput locality of Bharat Nagar on Bhiwandi outskirts at around 9.30pm on Friday, Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation's sub-station fire officer Rajesh Pawar said on Friday.

In the mishap, Anisha Ashraf Ali and her son Altaf Ali were crushed to death, he said.

The other ten injured, including eight women, were rushed to IGM hospital.

One seriously injured person was later shifted to Mumbai's Sion hospital, he said.
