Tharoor 'inseparable', won’t resign from govt: Cong

Defending Shashi Tharoor, the Congress on Wednesday ruled out his resignation from the Union council of ministers and said he is an “inseparable part” of the party.

The statement is seen as a virtual snub to its trusted ally, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which had asked Tharoor to dissociate himself from ministerial duties till the ongoing probe into the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar was over.

“This could be DP Tripathi’s personal opinion...We are not the conscience keeper of NCP. Tharoor is in a responsible ministerial position and an inseparable part of the Congress. There is no question of his resignation,” party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said.

He maintained that no personal allegations have been levelled against him by anyone over this unfortunate incident. “Neither any individual, any party nor any organisation are insinuating vis-à-vis the alleged suicide or the alleged murder of Sunanda. When there is no charge and nobody is alleging any role of Tharoor, why should he resign?”

Stopping short of demanding Tharoor’s resignation, Tripathi had said he should keep away from the ministry as this was needed according to the principle of propriety. Tripathi dismissed suggestions that his demand was due to compulsions of politics of Kerala where the NCP is part of the opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF).

“We really mourn Sunanda Pushkar’s death from the core of our heart. However, the matter is serious,” he said.
