Even as he battles a personal crisis and Kerala CPI(M) is gunning for him, Union minister Shashi Tharoor was named among the 18 official spokespersons for the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Among the prominent inclusions were Tharoor, Union power minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and social media activist Sanjay Jha, all of whom will hold the brief for the party at this crucial period.

In an effort to reach out more effectively to electronic media, the party has also increased its list of TV faces from 36 to 54. A new group of spokespersons who will appear on national media on state issues has also been separately created. Such a move comes after a series of workshops to identify potential talents for the job.

Union ministers Anand Sharma, P Chidambaram, Salman Khurshid, Ghulam Nabi Azad and party general secretary Mukul Wasnik are the five senior spokespersons who have been included and will hold regular briefings. Abhishek Manu Singh has also been included.

Chandan Yadav, one of the new entrants, said that the immediate challenge will be, “improving communication”.
