Expressing confidence that Sashi Tharoor will "give a good account" of himself in the election for the post of UN Secretary General, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said for the first time India had dared to tell the world that it was ready to assume a role in the management of international polity.
Talking to reporters on way home from Havana, the Prime Minister said contrary to what some people in the country have been writing, "Tharoor is running very strong. In the last straw poll that was conducted he came number two."
"I believe it is a difficult task. For the first time, we have jumped into the fray and dare to tell the world that we are ready to assume our role in the management of international polity."
Singh said it was not going to materialise in one day. "There are difficulties but I remain hopeful that Sashi Tharoor will give a good account of himself."
He said whenever he got an opportunity during his trip to Brazil and Cuba, he had raised Tharoor's candidature with Heads of State and Government hailing him as an "oustanding candidate".
