Apropos of the editorial The inflation puzzle (February 11), the spiralling prices of consumer goods and food items have made life difficult for the poor. Several fiscal and monetary measures are there to tame the burgeoning WPI, but the current situation has caused much disquiet among people. Not everyone can understand the technical pleas that the government puts forward. The government must try a lot harder to see that people do not suffer unduly.

Don’t target Modi alone
Jyotirmaya Sharma in Fifteen minutes of infamy (February 12) reveals a biased mindset. Howsoever inhuman the so-called Gujarat pogrom has been, the reality is that was not unprovoked and was in retaliation to the Godhra incident.
Narendra Modi’s position as the Chief Minister at that time was indefensible. But what would have happened had there been any other CM in the state? When both the parties are guilty, it is wrong to single out one person for all the wrongs.
Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray in his usual style advised party activists to stand united and declare a holy war against Muslims so as to bring Islam in India to its knees (Holy war against Indian Muslim, Tiger, January 30). This kind of outburst spreads venom against the minorities who are on an equal footing vis-a-vis the Hindus goes against the Constitution which enshrines equal rights to all religions.
Pankaj Vohra in his article Walking on thorns (January 29) tried to paint a cosy picture for the Congress in the assembly elections. He also predicted that Navjot Singh Sidhu would have tough time if the family of Gurnam Singh publicly opposes him. Does Vohra think the voters of Amritsar are so stupid that they would elect their representatives on the basis of an accident some years ago and that too in Patiala.
