From the book
There is, strictly , no such ting as a Buddhist act of compassion. A genuine Buddhist practitioner would never be interested in labelling any act as Buddhist, let alone one of compassion. In the Buddhist teaching, compassion is universal. Even Mother Teresa said, “Religion has nothing to do with compassion.”

And yet there is a very special favour that the Buddhist teachings can bring to the understanding and experience of compassion, no matter what one’s religious affiliations may be. It is said that Buddhist shakyamuni himself did not achieve enlightenment from the efforts of one lifetime; rather it was the merit accumulated from a thousand lifetimes of selfless acts that crated the ground for this ultimate enlightenment.
