If the name LittleBig-Planet is new to you, then you’ve missed out on what is one of the most revolutionary games of this generation. The original game had 50 levels, and the same tools used to create them were made available to the player allowing them to make their own levels and share them with the world. There are over three million LittleBigPlanet levels playable today, and they’re all free. Developer Media Molecule has now improved and expanded the LBP formula in a number of ways, delivering a new game that is more cinematic, more fun, and gives more creative freedom than before.
Single player mode
But for the creatively challenged, there’s the LBP2 story mode, which takes you through seven worlds, each with five to seven levels along with a few more optional ones. Each world follows a particular theme, and is vastly different in style and appeal from the others. While one has you jumping and skipping along a world made of chocolate and other confections, another has you dodging traps, fire and other hazards in an industrial environment. The whole game, including the community levels, can be played co-operatively by up to four players. And you will want to play with friends because the fun factor grows as you add more players.
We loved the gameplay in the first game and there are many reasons to love this one more. The first reason is the power-ups and weapons. From time to time, you’ll be given a pick-up that grants you a special ability, from lifting and throwing objects to a gun that shoots pastries. These pick-ups add a lot more variety and the levels that use them have a fresh appeal to their design. Like its predecessor, LBP2 is an explosion of colour. From lush jungle environs to dessert and factory levels, the game constantly throws new scenery your way.
LittleBigPlanet 2 is a never-ending game. The story mode, which will take you about seven hours to complete, is only the beginning. Media Molecule has outdone itself by upping the game in almost every way. No two levels feel alike, which is a massive achievement for a game of this type. This is a title every PS3 owner should pick up.
