A minor from Brijmanganj, in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj District, has alleged that a policeman raped her on the pretext of interrogation.
Poonam said that there was a petty brawl near her house, and the resultant chaos caused the police to arrive on the scene.
Later, three policemen of Brijmanganj Police Station took Poonam and her father for interrogation around 2 p.m. and detained them in a room.
According to Poonam, once her father slept, two constables took her by force to another room inside the police station premises where one of the cops raped her. The other left the room as if to facilitate the crime committed on her.
"Three policemen took my father and me for interrogation. They made us stay in a room. Soon my father slept. Seeing this, two policemen took me to another room. They switched off the lights. One policeman left the room and the other did beastly acts with me. They warned me not to utter a word about it or else they would whip me," lamented Poonam.
On returning home, a terrified Poonam broke down before her mother.
"She cried and told me that when she went to the police station, a policeman acted immorally with her," said Maanmati, Poonam's mother.
The rape allegation is a major blow to the image of the Uttar Pradesh Police, which has ordered an inquiry into the case.
Ram Pal Singh Sanger, Circle Officer, Frenda, Maharajganj, paraded all the policemen who were on duty at the time of of the crime.
Sanger said that Poonam has has refused to recognise anyone, fearful about some sort of retaliation.
"We will call the girl again. Today a woman police constable will take the girl for a medical check-up. If the allegation is proved, the guilty will be strictly punished," Sanger added.
