Yakub Memon was headed for the gallows after President Pranab Mukherjee dismissed a mercy petition by the 1993 Mumbai blasts convict late on Wednesday, hours after the Supreme Court upheld the validity of the death warrant, exhausting all his options.
Nagpur's central jail was ready with a rope and a hangman, even as a hearing was on after senior lawyers moved the apex court late at night. A constable who executed 26/11 attacks terrorist Ajmal Kasab at Pune’s Yerawada jail in 2012 will be the hangman for Memon while the rope has been sourced from outside, jail officials said.
The prison has turned into a virtual fortress with policemen brandishing AK-47 guns, anti-landmine vehicles and paramilitary forces deployed in the area.
According to jail officials, the schedule for July 30, when Yakub turns 53, has been decided.
After the hanging, doctors will examine Yakub's body and then a message will be sent to the home minister by 7.00am. And later, Yakub's family members will be conveyed about the news over phone.
