VIDYAWATI WAS murdered. She was lapped up by the surging flames after being pushed onto to her husband Lakhan Pal’s pyre by a revengeful mob.  Vidyawati’s three children, who spoke to reporters at the State Women’s Commission here today,  corroborated this version.

Vidyawati died on May 18 on the funeral pyre of her husband at Rari Khurd village in Fatehpur.

Speaking to the Hindustan Times on Tuesday, Vidyawati’s 19-year-old son Neeraj said, “I pleaded with my mother several times not to stay with Rohit in Fatehpur but she never listened to me. She even took away my sisters Pooja (15) and Arti (17) to stay with her. And that forced me to stay with them to ensure that they were safe.” Neeraj worked as a mechanic there.

A Rs 10 lakh life insurance policy is said to have become the reason behind the whole tragedy, including the murder of Lakhan Lal. Rohit, an insurance agent, had his eye on that money, as Vidyawati was the nominee of that policy. Arti said, “I don’t know if my mother was involved in his murder but I am sure Rohit was involved. He is the one who killed my father for money.”

“Two days after my father had come for dinner my mother and I went to our village Rari Khurd where we were told that my father did not return after he had gone to Fatehpur. After this we went to search for him and found him dead.

After this the police suspected that I had murdered my father and locked me up,” said Neeraj.

The girls said that their mother had called them to the village and when they reached the village their aunts and a few villagers locked them up in a room and beat them mercilessly.

However, when their father’s cremation took place they were not present  there and so had not seen anything but they were now certain that their uncles and their sons had murdered their mother as well.

“My uncles Kartar Singh and Ram Singh along with their sons Ram Vilas and Dhantu murdered my mother by throwing her on the funeral pyre of my father,” said Arti

“My aunties and other villagers had locked us up and insisted that we don’t tell anything to the police and others. They also said that we would stay with them and they would marry us off soon,” said Pooja.

However, now the children want to stay with their uncle Prem Lal, who works in a mill and who was never involved with all this. They also want that their uncles and Rohit get punished. Both the girls study in class nine.
