This Diwali, think twice before you get behind the wheels after gulping down a drink.
In order to rein in drunk drivers, the Gurgaon traffic police will launch a ‘Respect the Road’ campaign from Friday night. Those found with blood alcohol content of more than 30mg per 100ml will be arrested on the spot, police said.
The drive will continue till Diwali, said police commissioner SS Deswal. The city has around 600 liquor selling and drinking spots, most of them along MG Road. Police personnel, provided with alcometers, will maintain vigil outside pubs, bars, discotheques and liquor vends. “We will depute teams outside bars and vends to take breath samples. Drivers who fail the test will be arrested under the Motor Vehicle Act,” said Bharti Arora, DCP (traffic).
Meanwhile, private beer company SABMiller India, in association with Home Safe-Chauffeur Service, has offered to provide a drop back home to residents. “We are promoting alternatives such as hire a driver, rent a cab or designate a sober driver. Hoardings are being put up across the city,” said an official of SABMiller India.
