As if modern day state-of-the-art super luxury liners were not enough for the rich and famous, a Germany based company Club Alanzo is getting a replica of a historic pirate “Junk” ship — The Red Dragon — to be fabricated in India.
“Junks” are traditional wooden ships that were used by the Chinese Navy in the 15th century for maritime activities and were also a favourite among pirates for their sea voyages.
The Rs 69 crore super-luxury junk will be fitted with plasma TV sets, satellite phones, Internetconnection and state-of-the-art modern paraphernalia in all of its nine cabins that will be made from wood sourced from India and different parts of the world.
The first ship in the fleet named Alanzo I is world’s largest junk and is being constructed in near Ghodbunder in Thane at the Classicraft Marine Works.
A cruise on this piece of ‘Junk’ is not for just about everyone.
The most expensive 540 square foot room on the high seas fitted with resplendent regalia would cost just Rs 2.37 lakh per person per night.
“We chose to get the ship built in India because India has cheap labour and best in its class traditional craftsmen. The junk will cost much cheaper to build in India. Wood for the craft will be sourced from different parts of the world,” Alanzo Langecker of Alanzo VIP Cruises of Germany told Hindustan Times.
At 49.5 m long and 9.8 mwide, this super luxury craft can take on 17 crew and 12 passengers. It will make its maiden voyage 2010. Plans are that the junk will sail in the Caribbean in January to May, in the Mediterranean for the next four months — and be available for charter at a cool Rs 1.38 crore per week for the other months.
The promoters hope that the ship will last for at least 250 years as compared to modern day steel vessels that need to be dismantled after 40 to 50 years in service.
“The junk is being aimed for the high net worth individuals. Every cabin will be fit for a Maharaja and will be decorated in a variety of styles ranging from Indian to Japanese, Moroccan and Baroque,” says Juergen Wolff, major shareholder of Alanzo I.
“The ship sail as its traditional predecessors did on three sails, the eco-friendly fuel, wind. However, it also be powered by a 450 BHP Volvo D16 diesel engine, two propellers, one bow thruster, for cruising,” Wolff said.
