Janaki Viswanathan

does a roundup of all the advertisements that made the rounds of the small screen this week.

It’s a treat
Perk ad
Sharman Joshi (please wear a T-shirt at least), bimbette and a crate of chocolates are on a lonely beach... waiting to be rescued. A bottle washes ashore. Joshi jots down a desperate message on a scrap of paper: “Please send ship.”
Days later, the bottle floats back... with a ship inside. Funny. Joshi and bimbette shrug and grab another chocolate bar. Maybe Joshi will slim down a bit once they’re through with the chocolates.

Ride alert
Hero Honda ad
A helicopter drops a yellow bike onto a helipad. Hrithik Roshan is riding it. Next, he’s grabbing a microphone and pointing it to his heart. Dhak dhak bolo India or something. Priyanka Chopra on a Kinetic and Irrfan Pathan join him. They ride through highways, night, day, sing, dance, perform on stage. At least more than a minute long and booooring.

Cell search
Virgin Mobile ad
Hospital ward. Boy with arm cast checks out pretty nurse. His phone rings. Nurse helps him look around for it... in his trouser pockets. Boy thrilled. No phone. Nurse leaves. Cut to the next ward in which boy’s pal is lying with a leg cast, cell phone in hand. “My turn now,” giggles leg-cast boy. Only, this time it’s a male nurse. Free outgoing-incoming calls between friends. Bratty, irreverent and hilarious.

The wedding crashers
Nerolac Paints ad
Atul Kulkarni and Vijay Raaz arrive at a wedding ceremony. The duo make it into the house. The rooms are in rich shades of red and white. Kulkarni points to the empty paint jar. It looks classy but is economical. Whatever. Too laboured.
