Nuclear energy is the only real option and the scientists and technocrats who have evaluated the US nuclear offer are convinced that the terms are in the national interest.

This has reference to the editorial BARCing up the right tree (September 3), India has 50 per cent of the world’s total thorium deposits which is enough to generate 3,50,000 MW energy for years. We should find a way to capitalise on our vast thorium deposits through consolidating indigenous research at Barc.

India’s options on power generation are limited and hydro-power is subject to the vagaries of monsoon. Our coal reserves are not sufficient to generate quality power. Nuclear energy is the only real option and the scientists and technocrats who have evaluated the US nuclear offer are convinced that the terms are in the national interest.
