Thousands perform 'Karkidaka Vavu bali'

india Updated: Jul 30, 2011 13:51 IST

Thousands of people paid homage to their ancestors by offering "bali tharpanam" on the auspicious Karkidaka Vavu day (new moon day in July-August) on Saturday at various holy rivers, seashores and temples across Kerala.

People thronged the "Bali tharpanam" centres from the wee-hours. Temples in the state also witnessed heavy rush of devotees on the occasion.

People believe that the departed souls attain "moksha" (liberartion) if the ritualistic homage is performed on Karkidaka vavu.

Police and state authorities have made elaborate arrangements to facilitate people to offer bali tharpan at important places such as Thiruvaloom Sree Parausurama Temple, Shangumugham Beach, Varkala Papanasam Beach and Aluwa river base in Kochi.

Kerala State Road Transport Corporation operated special services.
