THREE PERSONS were killed and 12 others injured in a firecracker explosion in Kuraoli town late on Saturday evening.
Three houses were destroyed in the blast and over half-a-dozen others suffered cracks. Crackers were allegedly being manufactured in the locality without licence.
District magistrate Chandra Prakash, superintendent of police K Satyanarayana, along with the circle officer and the additional superintendent of police, rushed to the explosion site and supervised rescue operations.
Before that, BJP MLA Ashok Chauhan helped extricate Sanjiv (25), son of Kursen, from the debris. Sanjiv was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Kursen’s daughter Hemlata (7) and Babu Ram’s daughter Kamini (2½ yrs) died under the debris. However, the condition of the injured, who were hospitalised, was said to be improving on Sunday. Chauhan held the Kuraoli police responsible for the explosion. He questioned how the police allowed manufacture of crackers in a densely populated locality, though there was no licence.
He demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident and said “guilty” officers should be punished.
Chauhan urged the district magistrate and the superintendent of police to ensure that neither the manufacture nor sale of crackers was allowed in densely populated localities.
