Three get 2 year RI in 1992-riot case

The special riots court on Saturday sentenced three persons to two years rigorous imprisonment for rioting and assaulting a police constable during the 1992-93 communal clash in Mumbai.

Magistrate SS Sharma convicted Hasan Shaikh, Sayed Karim Chand and Salim Sayed and imposed a fine of Rs 3500 each.

According to prosecution, on March 23, 1993 the complainant, police constable Vijay Ambedkar was on patrol duty when he saw the three accused troubling an insane man at suburban Ghatkopar area.

When Ambedkar tried to stop them, the three forcibly pushed him into an autorickshaw and assaulted him.

The three witnesses produced by the prosecution to prove their case turned hostile before the court.

The three were convicted only on the basis of the statement of the complainant.
