Three get RI for Kandhamal violence

A fast track court in Phulbani today sentenced three persons to five years rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on each of them in separate cases for their involvement in the violence in Kandhamal district.

Additional sessions Judge S K Das convicted one Iswar Dondia in connection with unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapons and torching of houses belonging to minority community at Raikela village during the riots in 2008.

In another judgement, the court convicted two others, identified as Kamdev Pradhan and Balaji Pradhan, on similar charge of unlawful assembly with arms and house torching case at Midabali village in Burdinazu gram panchayat.

The court, however, acquitted five persons.

Two fast track courts conducting cases relating to riots in Kandhamal, had so far convicted 105 persons and acquitted 445 people, sources said.
