Three persons met a watery grave while five others were feared drowned following Ganesh idol immersion rituals in Bharuch and Vadodara districts, police said on Wednesday.

Five youths are feared drowned in sea water near Vankhadi village of Hansot taluka on Tuesday and efforts are on to trace their bodies, Bharuch DSP Siddharth Khatri said on Wednesday.

A group of people from Hansot in Bharuch had gone to immerse a Ganesh idol near Koteshwar Mahadev temple, but due to heavy rains, they decided to head towards the sea near Vankhadi village for fast disposal of the statue following a high tide in the sea.

However, on their way back to Hansot, six persons were found missing from the group, out of which one identified as Ramesh was rescued while five others remained untraceable, Khatri said.

Meanwhile, a 32-year-old man drowned in Narmada river at Shuklatirth in an immersion ritual. His body was fished out last evening, they said.

In Vadodara, two persons drowned in Dev river at Dankheda village of Waghodia taluka on Tuesday, they added.
