Three persons were killed in a shootout held between two criminal gangs outside Roorkee jail on Tuesday noon. According to police, a local criminal, Chinu Pandit, was released and more than half a dozen of his supporters had reached the main gate of the jail to receive him.
A group of criminals hiding in a sedan outside the jail opened fire on Pandit and his associates near the main gate of jail, said LM Upreti, commanding officer (police) of Roorkee.
The attackers fled from the scene after attacking Pandit and his associates. Two of Pandit's associates died on the spot while one was declared dead in the hospital. Out of three of those killed, one is Pandit's brother.
"We are searching for the criminals. Police posts at border areas have also been informed so that the attackers do not flee Uttarakhand," said Upreti.
