A militant and a special police officer were among three persons killed in a 20-hour long gunbattle in Baramulla district, officials said on Wednesday.
The third person killed is a teenager. The gunbattle broke out last evening when police assisted by troops of Rashtriya Rifles launched a search operation at Nadihal village.
An operation is on to nab a militant who is believed to be hiding in the area and offering resistance, officials said.
The murdered SPO is identified as Waheed, they said adding Tariq Ahmad (16) was killed when a stray bullet hit him. He was hit by the bullet last night and succumbed while being taken to a hospital.
The militant was killed this morning when the operation to flush out the two militants, hiding in the house of one Ali Mohammad, resumed this morning after a brief halt, Senior Superintendent of Police (Baramulla) Viplav Kumar said.
The house was damaged in the encounter, he said. The gunbattle erupted around six pm last evening when the militants opened fire on the joint search party at Lam-Mohalla Nadihal.
The sources said Waheed succumbed to injuries while Shahnawaz who was injured in the neck was rushed to SKIMS in Srinagar for specialized treatment and his condition was critical.
