At least two policemen and a civilian were killed and two soldiers were wounded in a bomb attack near a roadblock at the entrance to Trincomalee town, police said.

Attackers, believed to be from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), attacked the Anuradhapura junction checkpoint at the entrance to the north-eastern port town, a police spokesman said.

The two constables and a civilian were killed on the spot while two soldiers manning the location were wounded, he said.

The attack came hours after a similar bombing in the eastern district of Batticaloa where four policemen were wounded.
