Heavy security is in place in Ayodhya on the 15th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition on Thursday, police said.
While barricades have been put up on main roads leading to the disputed site, extensive checking of vehicles is being done on the Faizabad highway, they said.
Bomb disposal and anti-sabotage teams, Rapid Action Force, PAC and paramilitary force personnel have been deployed at key places including temples, they added.
The Uttar Pradesh government has issued a state-wide alert in view of the Babri Masjid anniversary.
All district police chiefs have been asked to ensure extra vigil to maintain peace in their cities, sources said.
A number of programmes have been organised by various Hindu and Muslim organisations to mark the day. VHP will be observing the day as Sankalp Diwas and a programme will be held at Karsewakpuram on Thursday.
Muslim League and Babri Masjid action committee too have separately planned programmes to mark the anniversary.
Meanwhile, the shops in Muslim-dominated areas were closed and their is no news of any untoward incident in any area of the city.
