As power, or rather the lack of it, plays havoc in Gurgaon, a majority of the city's residents feel it's time to introduce private players to stem the mess.
According to a recent Hindustan Times-C fore survey, 61% people felt the need for power distribution in Gurgaon to be completely privatised on the lines of Delhi.
When asked if they were willing to pay extra for uninterrupted power supply in peak summer irrespective of the cost, 25% replied in the positive. A good 56% said they were willing to pay more, but only to a certain extent.
Obviously, as the survey reveals, the people are not happy with the functioning of the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitaran Nigam (DHBVN), which has failed to upgrade the power distribution system to match the growing demand.
The rising demand for power is fuelled by the increasing number of malls - all huge power guzzlers -- in the city. A mall uses around 3 MW of electricity every day, enough to electrify around 1,500 houses a day.
The city's current power demand per day is 1500 mw. The installed capacity of DHBVN's units is 1300 mw per day but it is able to supply only 900 to 1100 mw.
There are massive outages every summer due to the power shortage. The outdated infrastructure is a double whammy. People taking to the streets every summer has now become a routine matter.
Besides power, respondents also expressed dissatisfaction over issues such as water scarcity, cleanliness, the absence of a robust transport system and even signages.
Forty-three respondents said they were forced to wait for a short while to find buses, taxis or autos while 31 per cent said it was very difficult to find public transport.
Road signages are nearly absent in the city, a matter highlighted in the survey. 54% people said road signs in Gurgaon were not placed appropriately, causing inconvenience to visitors.
