Twenty-three-old Priyadarshini Mattoo, a final-year law student of Delhi University, was raped and murdered in her Vasant Kunj flat by classmate Santosh Singh, son of a senior IPS officer then posted in Jammu and Kashmir. Here's the timeline of Mattoo's troubles with Santosh that ended in her murder on January 23, 1996:
February 25, 1995: Santosh Singh follows Priyadarshini Mattoo's car on a motorbike and tries to stop her. She lodges a complaint at the RK Puram Police Station, but Singh is let off after giving an undertaking not to harass her in future.
August 16, 1995: Mattoo files another complaint against Santosh after he tries to break into her residence. Santosh gives another undertaking. A personal security officer was detailed to protect her.
October 27, 1995: Mattoo files a complaint with the dean of Delhi University's Campus Law Faculty.
October 30, 1995: Santosh lodges complaint with DU authorities against Mattoo stating that she was simultaneously pursuing two courses M.Com and LL.B at the university, which is against the rules.
November 1, 1995: Mattoo is issued a show-cause notice by Delhi University authorities. She is issued another notice on November 27. Santosh Singh pursues his complaint to authorities with repeated reminders. Mattoo submits her reply, which is accepted by the varsity.
November 6, 1995: Mattoo files a fresh complaint against Santosh for trying to hold her arm and harassing her on the campus. Santosh is arrested but is released after submitting a personal bond at the police station.
January 23, 1996: Day of murder:
9 am: Personal security officer Rajinder Singh, who had been assigned security of Mattoo does not reach her house on time. Mattoo leaves the house with her parents in her car.
10.30 am: She reaches law faculty.
11.15 am-noon: She attends a class. Rajinder Singh meets her on the campus. Later, during his submissions before the trail court, Rajinder admitted seeing Santosh on the campus on that fateful day.
1.45 pm: Mattoo reaches her house after dropping off Rajinder Singh at the police station with instructions to come to her house at 5.30 pm.
2.30 pm: The household help Virender Prasad leaves the house.
4.50 pm: Santosh is allegedly seen near the victim's flat by a neighbour.
4.55 pm: Prasad returns, leaves for pharmacy, returns and takes the dog for a walk.
5.30 pm: Advocate OP Singh, a neighbour of Mattoo, sees Santosh driving off on his mobike. (The advocate later turned hostile later.)
5.40 pm: Rajinder Singh arrives with constable Dev Kumar, rings the bell but there is no response. The door is ajar, so they step in, go to Mattoo's bedroom and find her lying dead under the bed, with the cord of a heat convector wrapped around her neck.
