Tehelka's founder-editor Tarun Tejpal has made headlines for all the wrong reasons this time.
“A bad lapse of judgment, an awful misreading of the situation, have led to an unfortunate incident…” he wrote in the email to Tehelka's managing editor Shoma Chaudhury after being accused of sexually assaulting a junior colleague.

The young journalist writes an email to managing editor Shoma Chaudhury detailing the alleged sexual assault. Demands inquiry according to the guidelines laid down in the Supreme Court’s Vishakha judgment and an apology from Tejpal.

Tejpal sends an email to Chaudhury, admitting there had been a “bad lapse of judgment” and an “awful misreading of the situation”. Says he is going to “recuse” himself from the magazine’s editorship for six months as “penance” for his “misconduct”.
Chaudhury forwards Tejpal’s email to Tehelka staff, adds a short note saying the magazine had responded to the “untoward incident” with the “right thought and action.”
Tejpal’s email and Chaudhury’s forwarded version are leaked and posted on a file-sharing website. News spreads on social media websites.
The young journalist’s email with the details of the alleged sexual assault is leaked and begins to circulate.

Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar says an inquiry will be conducted into the incident by Goa Police.
National Commission for Women (NCW) also writes to Goa Police to take action.

Goa Police issues a statement that a formal FIR has been lodged based on the NCW’s complaint.
Emails exchanged between Tejpal and the young woman on November 19, wherein he admits attempting a “sexual liaison” with her twice despite her “clear reluctance”, emerge.
In response to Tejpal’s email, the young journalist writes to Chaudhury on November 21, saying he tried to “sexually molest” her and violate her “integrity”.

In interviews to TV news channels, Chaudhury claims she heard a different version from Tejpal, who said the encounter was “consensual.” She also told a newspaper she would not go to police, as it was up to the young journalist to file a formal complaint.
Tejpal issues a statement saying he would cooperate with police, and had only stepped down after an unconditional apology due to Chaudhury’s insistence, even though he was not at fault.
