India's middle distance runners, Tintu Luka and Ghamanda Ram, had mixed luck in the first race of their two-week long European tour.
While Tintu began her campaign in 800m with a win at the Folksam Grand Prix in Karlstad, Sweden, on Wednesday, Ghamanda finished fifth in the two-lap race.
For a major part of the race, Tintu was overshadowed by Egle Balciunaite of Lithuania, but raced ahead in the last 200m to win in 2:02.58 seconds. Egle was a close second with 2:02.72s while Melissa Bishop of Canada took the third spot with 2:02.80s.
Awarded Swedish kroner 5000 (R34,800 approx) for her efforts, Tintu's next stop is Amsterdam and she will round off the trip with the race in Belgium.
Ghamanda wasn't able to generate the desired speed towards the closing stages of the race and eventually clocked 1:47.25 seconds to finish fifth. The race was won by Mukhtar Mohammed of Britain, who clocked 1:45.90s. Ismail Ismail of Sudan (1:46.09) and Andreas Bube of Denmark (1:46.49) finished second and third respectively.
