A Trinamool Congress leader Abu Ayesh Mondal allegedly beat up an employee of a toll plaza on National Highway 2 in Hooghly district when he was asked to pay the toll.

According to the toll plaza employee, after he stopped Mondal's car Sunday afternoon, the enraged TMC leader came out of his vehicle, picked up his shoe and begin thrashing him. The attendant said he had to plead and beg for mercy, and then only did the Trinamool leader relent.

He said the incident has been recorded on the CCTV. The employee lodged a complaint with the police, but no action has been taken against Mondal.

In fact, on Monday Mondal, who is also the chairperson of the West Bengal Minority Development and Finance Corporation, lodged a counter complaint against the attendant with the police.

"A year ago, I had a problem with the toll plaza blocking my car and then after mediation with the police, the owner of the plaza told me that I can pass through without paying toll. But over the past one year, its employees have blocked my car a few times," Mondal told HT on Monday.

"On Sunday when I was going to Burdwan, I again got down to speak to the officers. The employee told me that I will have to pay Rs. 500 since I had not been paying the toll regularly. Then the officers came and told me that I can pass," claimed Mondal.

"The employee asked for a bribe and I only used harsh words. But I never beat them up, let alone with my shoe," claimed Mondal.

Mondal a former CPI(M) MLA and MP was expelled by the party in 2009 when he promptly joined Trinamool Congress.

"I want the party to takes action against him for his behaviour. We fear for our security," said Bikash Chowdhury, an employee of the Dankuni toll plaza, who also received the blows.

Chowdhury, too, is a ruling party supporter, but mumbled "I shall accept whatever the party bosses will decide."

According to the employees of the plaza, Mondal told them party chief and chief minister Mamata Banerjee will come and get him released if he is arrested.

"The circle of atrocities that the chief minister has unleashed in the state has come a full circle with this incident," remarked Asansol MP and MoS urban development, Babul Supriyo.

On December 4, Trinamool youth leader Biswajit Ray had assaulted an assistant engineer of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited. The police failed to arrest him too.

Trinamool labour wing leader Dola Sen had slapped a policeman on Bally bridge near Kolkata when he dared to stop her.
