Mamata Banerjee could have done without one critic — her party MP Kabir Suman, who railed against the West Bengal chief minister over her government’s failure in the Madhyamgram rape and murder case.

“If she does not wake up right now, people and history won’t spare her,” the 65-year-old maverick lyricist-singer told a television channel on Friday.

Reacting to the rape-and-burn incident, Suman said he would have taken up arms if he could to protest against the state government. “I feel like throwing bombs,” said Suman, without specifying who his target would be. But it was clear his ire was directed as much against the state government as against the perpetrators of the heinous crime where a group first gang-raped a minor twice and then set her on fire to wipe out evidence after she became pregnant.

Suman said he would be glad if he was prosecuted for this statement.

This is not the first time that the Jadavpur MP has stung the party with his comments. He first spoke out against corruption in the party within six months of being elected, and his subsequent railings against the party resulted in Trinamool leaders ostracising him. In 2009-10, he embarrassed the party by composing and singing in support of Maoists.

He condemned the Left too, saying, “They were no less evil as they had also committed many brutalities”. The burning of Tapasi Malik, a girl of about 16-17 of Singur in 2006 was one of the most sordid examples of the CPI(M) rule, he said.

Venting extreme frustration Suman said he had seen enough of democracy and was almost reaching a conclusion that democracy won’t cure these evils in society.

“I am of failing health, but I can compose songs and sing. I will continue doing that to protest,” he told HT.
