Tamil Nadu has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records with its feat of having "most people washing hands" at a time, officials said.

The congregation of 15,115 students in Chennai to wash their hands as part of the World Hand washing day in October last year has recently been registered in the Guinness Book of World Records, Health Secretary V K Subburaj said in a press release in Chennai on Wednesday.

The programme was jointly organised by the state health department, World Health Organisation (WHO) and Hindustan Unilever Lifebuoy to create awareness on personal hygiene and the need to wash hands before consuming food and after going to the toilet, he said.
