The Tamil Nadu police is reviewing VIP security measures after receiving a tip-off that the LTTE has been planning assassination attempts on the Prime Minister and his cabinet members when they visit Tamil Nadu.

The advisory from a central intelligence agency came ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Chennai on January 3.

According to intelligence input, a section of the LTTE, who escaped the Sri Lankan army’s onslaught in May 2009, is trying to regroup in India and planning attacks on top political leaders.

Director general of police Letika Sharan told HT on Wednesday: “We have taken this very seriously and will strengthen the security measures.”

On the verge of a total extinction, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is trying to regroup and execute attacks on high-profile targets, such as the PM, P Chidambaram and Tamil Nadu CM M Karunanidhi.
