Its glamorous avatar would shock the Romans. Toga, the single piece of cloth worn in ancient Rome, is now being worn by style divas such as Gauri Khan and Sushmita Sen. While Khan wore it to a recent awards function, Sen flaunted a Toga-inspired jump suit at a fashion show in Delhi. Recently, a popular nightclub in the Capital even held a Toga-themed party.
Long, clingy cloth, draped across one shoulder, designers say is a great style to hide flab. “It’s great to hide belly flab. Those with a broad frame, should wear a Toga that covers the full shoulder,” says designer Nikhil Mehra. “Indian women look great in Togas because the drape is so similar to a sari,” says designer Amit GT. “
Toga dresses are currently available at high-end stores such as Lanvin, Mango, Ogaan and Ensemble for Rs 3,500 to Rs 1,40,000. However, expect these dresses to hit the high street soon.
