A senior official of the Himachal Pradesh police was booked on Monday for abetment to suicide and trying to destroy evidence from the crime scene.

“Inspector General (Law and Order) Pradeep Kumar Sarpal, his wife and son, Sidharth Sarpal, were booked on Sunday for abetting Ritu Kalmatia’s suicide and later tampering with evidence,” SP R.M. Sharma said.

Ritu, who was working as a lecturer in a private college, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan on Sunday. At the time of committing suicide, she was alone at home, the police said.

However, in the police complaint, her family members alleged that Ritu was forced to end her life after the parents of Sidharth, with whom she had been having a relationship for more than ten years, turned down the marriage proposal.

In the complaint, they also alleged that since the father of the boy was a senior police officer, the case might not be investigated properly and crucial evidence could be wiped out.

The district police chief requested a crime investigation department inquiry into the case.
