Basant Kumar Rath, the superintendent of police (SP) at Ramban, said the security forces comprising troops of 61 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the state police had encircled a house in Lancha village, about 180 km north of Jammu, following a tip-off.

After about an hour-long operation the terrorist, identified as Hekmatyar alias Shrief, was killed.

"It was a clean operation in which there was no collateral damage and we managed to kill one of the top terrorists of the area," Rath said.

The security forces had killed the top man of HM, Billoo Gujjar, on September 5 and two more commanders of the organisation in neighbouring Doda district on October 24. Javed Burky, the top man of HM in Doda district, was killed on October 30.
