Ramanan, Deputy Military Commander of the LTTE in the eastern Sri Lankan district of Batticaloa, was assassinated by a sniper in Vavunathivu on Sunday.

Pro-LTTE websites Tamilnet and www.sankathi.com alleged that Ramanan was killed by a Sri Lankan Army sniper while he was inspecting the Forward Defence Line of the LTTE.

Basically an intelligence man, Ramaman was the intelligence chief of Batticalao district when Colonel Karuna was Special Commander.

He defected to the mainstream LTTE led by Prabhakaran when Karuna broke away from the latter and formed his own Tamileela Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) in March-April 2004.

Colonel Bhanu is currently Special Commander Batticaloa.
