Vasant Kunj domestic help

The 18-year-old domestic help, who was rescued from her employers from Delhi’s Vasant Kunj locality with head, face and hand injuries, doesn’t want to go back home in Jharkhand.

She wants to work in Delhi and earn for her family as does her sister in Mumbai, that is what she told the National Commission of Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where she is undergoing treatment. NCPCR member Vinod Tikoo tried to convince her to go back home in village Barkela of Sahebgunj in Jharkhand. But she was adamant on staying back and support her family financially.

Even the girl’s mother, who is at the hospital right now, said she was against her daughter’s staying back in Delhi, "We will not send our daughter to this hell again," she reportedly told Tikoo.

He said the irony was that the employers hired the girl for Rs1500 a month. After a year, the agent sent her mother only Rs5000, which makes it around Rs. 400 per month.

Tikoo said the NCPCR had verified the girl’s age as 18 years as she was born on September 8, 1995. Earlier, she was reported to be 15 years old.

"It is unbelievable how a girl, after suffering so much, still wants to work. One can imagine the pressure of financially supporting the family on her shoulders," said Tikoo.
