A 27-year-old tourist was allegedly pulled off a bus that had 50 other passengers and gangraped by four youths, barely 10 km from the Sun Temple in Konark on Sunday afternoon.
Police said the victim’s uncle, a 65-year-old man, accompanying her was beaten by the youths. He was the only one who came to her rescue when the woman was being dragged off the bus.
The youths then took her to a deserted spot along the Konark-Puri Marine Drive Road, about 70 km from Bhubaneswar, and raped her.
Puri superintendent of police Asit Panigrahi said all four had been arrested. They were identified as Gouranga (31), Santosh (33), Ramakant (33) and Debananda (32). The four were recovery agents of a finance company and hailed from the village of Baliguhali, near Puri.
The victim was also from Satyabadi village, near Puri.
Ramakant was caught soon after the rape. The other three were nabbed in raids by a Puri police squad on Sunday and Monday.
According to the victim’s statement to the police, the four youths had made obscene remarks when she was on the Sun Temple premises with her uncle. When she boarded the Puri-bound bus, two of them got on it with her. The other two followed the bus on motorcycles. At a deserted spot, about 10 km from Konark, the accused stopped the bus and forcibly took the woman out.
After raping her, the youths put her on another Puri-bound bus that was stopped on the way by the police who had already arrested Ramakant by then. The girl was found unconscious on the bus, the police said.
