Trade espresso: Slaps ke side effects

A solo release has always been considered auspicious by the film trade. But that belief went for a toss with the week's lone release Ugly aur Pagli directed by Sachin Khot.
Since it was pretty well publicised, it was expected to take a decent opening at the ticket windows.
Also PNC Productions' Pyaar ke Side/Effects has worked.. and a repeat performance was expected. All in vain.
Not so good
Despite the presence of Mallika Sherawat, the much-publicised 99 slaps, one kiss and the popular song, Talli ho gayi, the film opened to 30 to 40 per cent collections on its first day .
The evening shows were slightly better but only at the multiplexes. The first weekend collections in the multiplexes of Mumbai and Delhi were satisfactory but elsewhere it was disappointing.
Going by the response of the first weekend, the collections aren't expected to improve despite the fact that there are no other new options for moviegoers.
Tradewallas believe that if the tagline had been 99 kisses and one slap, the outcome would have been remarkably different.
The response to the first and second editions of The Mummy (in Hindi) had been pretty good. So it was felt that the dubbed version of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor would repeat the trick. No go. The original English language version opened with 40 to 50 per cent collections.
Apoorva Lakhia's Mission Istaanbul has proved to be a failed mission. During the weekdays, most of the shows had disastrous attendance. The numbers of the shows were reduced drastically in its second week.
The fate of Ganesh Acharya's Money Hai toh Honey Hai was no better. The film has been discontinued from many theatres in the city. Its first week collections sent shock waves across the film industry since it had a star like Govinda at the top of the cast line.
Shahid Kapoor has scored a hat trick with Kismat Konnection, after having delivered two back to back solohero hits Vivaah and Jab We Met.
Kismat Konnection opened with a worldwide gross box office of over Rs 27 crore during its opening weekend.
It scored the second highest opening weekend of the year so far in India, after Race. It is quite easily the highest opening for a solo hero film this year, sending the young actor's stock soaring.
