SHOPKEEPERS AND businessmen in MP Nagar downed their shutters today to protest Bhopal Municipal Corporation’s drive against commercial use of basement.
The shopkeepers and businessmen staged dharna and took out a rally demanding to stop the BMC drive against the basements. However, the offices in the area remained unaffected from this protest.
The BMC demolition squad has been carrying out the drive since past one week forcing the building owners to use the basements exclusively for parking of vehicles.
Some of the shops in zone-II, medical shops and some hotels also remained open. Later on the striking shopkeepers and
businessmen forced these shopkeepers and businessmen to close their establishments. Most of the shops opened in the
Addressing the dharna, MP Nagar Bhawan Swami and Vyavsai Mahasangh office bearers said that the basements were allowed to be used as godown and other purpose about 15-20 years back.
Now, the BMC has been harassing all the building owners without examining the permission, they alleged. The speakers also pleaded that the parking could not be developed in the basement due to limited space. Sangh office-bearers and building owners including Colonel G K Pandey, Dr PK Jain, Vipin Goswani, Rakesh Singhai were present on the occasion.
Sangh Secretary Vipin Goswami told the Hindustan Times that other organizations of traders are also supporting their demand.
He asked as to why the BMC administration has not been taking action against the officials, who issued permission and allowed commercial use of the basements since past many years. He said the ‘Bandh’ would resume from Monday, if no action was taken on their demands.
Goswami informed that the association would submit memorandum to Mayor Sunil Sood, Minister for Commerce and Industries Babulal Gaur and Minister for Urban Administration and Development Jayant Malaiya in support of their various demands.
Notice to bldg owners
The Bhopal Municipal Corporation demolition squad today marched in zone-I and zone-II of M P Nagar and issued notices to two dozen buildings owners using the basements illegally or the carried out illegal construction by going beyond the building permission.
The BMC administration told such building owners to remove their illegal construction within 24-hours. Meanwhile, the BMC commissioner Manish Singh reiterated that the action against illegal use of basements and illegal construction would continue.
