Cellular subscribers across India will now be able to enjoy cheaper roaming charges, telecom watchdog Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said on Wednesday in New Delhi.
The new roaming charges for mobile phone subscribers will Rs 1.40 for local calls and Rs 2.40 for STD calls and Rs 1.75 for incoming calls.
Charges for outgoing SMS continue to be under forbearance, a statement said.
Communication and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran had told reporters earlier on Wednesday: "Reduction in national roaming charges is essential."
TRAI has also said it wants to remove all the surcharges and the Rs 50 rental on roaming services.
The new order will come into effect from February 15, it said.
