Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living Foundation, tweeted on Wednesday evening that he tried to contact Rampal to "talk some sense", adding that Rampal’s secretary initially agreed to connect him, but kept disconnecting later.
Rampal, an engineer-turned-religious leader, is believed to be hiding in his ashram in Hisar in the face of a police operation against him.
"Events like this cause fear and disgust for religion and spirituality. Leaders should not think they are above the law. Simplicity & sacrifice should drive the leaders," Sri Sri tweeted.
With the standoff between police and the Hisar-based religious leader’s supporters taking a violent turn, Sri Sri said "people of all religions who misuse faith for personal gain should be severely dealt with". He further added that at the same time innocent leaders must be protected.
He also stressed the "dire need" for a Sarva Dharma council (an all religion panel) which can help prevent situations like these.
Rampal who has repeatedly defied court orders to appear before it on charges of conspiracy to murder, inciting mobs and contempt of court, was additionally slapped with sedition charges on Wednesday. Police, however, are yet to arrest him.
