Alleged attack on Opposition rallies in West Midnapore led to clashes in Ghatal and Kespur on Wednesday that left 23 Trinamool and Congress supporters, including the Trinamool candidate from Ghatal, injured.
Trinamool and Congress leaders pointed fingers at the CPI(M) but the latter denied the charges.
Three Congress supporters were injured when the Congress candidate’s campaign rally was attacked at Turia village in Keshpur.
Shankar Daloi, the Trinamool candidate and 19 other party supporters were injured in a similar attack at Lakshmanpur in Ghatal constituency.
Congress workers alleged CPI(M) goons attacked and threw stones at the rally in Keshpur, injuring three supporters. The Congress is lodging a complaint with West Midnapore district administration against the CPI(M). Congress leaders also alleged a similar attack at Sarui village last week that left three injured.
“The CPI(M) won the seat and captured the whole area by spreading terror. With the help of arms and goons, the CPI(M) won the elections the last time here. This time too they are intimidating people in many areas. But, this time people are coming to our rallies by ignoring the CPI(M)’s threats. So the CPI(M) is attacking and torturing our supporters,” said Md Rafique, a Congress leader in the district.
Trinamool leaders alleged 20 workers, including Daloi, were injured in an attack by the CPI(M). The party has lodged a complaint against the CPI(M). After hearing about the attack, Trinamool leader and MP Suvendu Adhikary went to Ghatal in the afternoon and organised a protest rally.
