A Trinamool Congress worker was shot dead by unknown assailants at Chakdaha area in Nadia district on Monday evening, police said.
Debabrata Bhadra (37) was standing beside a road at Jagannathpur Kalitala locality when the assailants fired at him from a close range. The assailants then fled from the spot after the firing.
Doctors declared the victim brought dead, they said.
Nadia district Trinamool president and state youth affairs minister Ujjwal Biswas, who went to the spot, alleged that CPI(M)-backed anti-socials were behind the murder.
Local Trinamool MLA Naresh Chaki claimed that Debabrata's father Nirmal Bhadra had earlier been threatened by CPI(M).
CPI(M) Chakdaha zonal secretary Amal Bhowmick denied his party's involvement in the murder and said it could have been the result of a feud among local property dealers.
Trinamool will observe 'Black Day' tomorrow and 'Protest Day' in Nadia on November 13 when senior party leader and Union minister Mukul Roy shall come, Chaki said.
