Days after the bitter separation with the Congress, the Trinamool Congress has decided not to contest the Lok Sabha by-election from Jangipur in West Bengal against President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit, a party leader said on Sunday.

"The party leadership has decided not to contest the Jangipur by-election. We won't field any candidate there," said Trinamool leader and state Panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee.

Abhijit Mukherjee, a first-time Congress law-maker from Nalhati assembly seat of Birbhum district of West Bengal, is contesting on the Congress ticket from the Jangipur. The Lok Sabha constituency fell vacant after his father's elevation to the post of president.

Pranab Mukherjee has been a two-time member of Parliament (MP) from Jangipur in Murshidabad district since 2004.

After Mukherjee's elevation as the president, Abhijit has expressed his desire to become an MP from Jangipur.
