Opposition Congress in Tripura has sought Election Commission's intervention to forthwith detain all persons, listed in police records for various crimes, immediately to ensure free and fair parliamentary elections.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N. Gopalaswami, the leader of the opposition (Congress), Ratan lal Nath yesterday alleged that the state police despite issuing warrants against 6015 persons having criminal background did neither arrest nor detain them "as they are close to a section of the ruling party".

The police authorities have not taken any initiative to arrest 3076 absconders wanted in serious criminal offences, Nath claimed. Expressing concern over the non-recovery of illegal arms in the state, Nath in his letter blamed the police of not having taken pro-active measures to recover illegal arms which might pose a serious threat to ensure free and fair elections.
