The J&K capital became tense on Sunday as clashes broke out between the police and Shia Muslims who had gathered to take out a Muharram procession. The police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse a crowd near Jehangeer Chowk, close to Srinagar’s Lal Chowk.
More than three dozen people were taken into preventive custody.
Traditionally, Shia Muslims used to march through uptown Srinagar. However, since 1990, Muharram processions have been banned here. Officials fear separatists can hijack the event and create law and order problems.
