Truck carrying bovines torched by mob in Jammu

Irate people on the outskirts of Jammu set ablaze a truck allegedly smuggling bovines late on Saturday evening.

The police after a tip-off that bovines are being smuggled to the Valley in three trucks laid special check points in the Nagrotra area.

During the checking of one such vehicle at traffic control post, the Nagotra police rescued four bovines. However, the culprits, including the driver and the cleaner of the truck, managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

Police also seized another truck at Jaggar Kotli, 20 km from Nagrota, carrying four bovines. Here too, both the drive and the cleaner fled the spot.

However, the third vehicle smuggling bovines turned turtle at Ban Toll Plaza, Nagrota, after the driver tried to break the check point. During the incident at the check point, a special police officer searching the vehicle also suffered injuries when the driver suddenly accelerated the vehicle to flee from the spot.

Out of the 10 bovines loaded in the truck, two died due in the mishap.

After getting the news, a mob from Nagrota reached the spot and set the truck ablaze.

Fire tenders rushed to the spot and fire was extinguished after couple of hours. However, the front portion of the truck was burnt.

A total of 18 bovines, including two dead, were seized by the police from three trucks.

The police have registered cases and manhunt was launched to nab the smugglers.

Station house officer, Nagrota Karan Chalotra said, “Till date, no arrest has been made. However, we have sounded the alert to all the police stations in the areas and are hopeful that culprits will soon be apprehended.”

He informed that normalcy has returned in the Nagrota area and situation has become peaceful.
