The original manuscript of the Ramacharitmanas written by Goswami Tulsidas was stolen from the residence of the mahant of Sankat Mochan temple on Thursday.

The entire district administration was on its toes after the news broke out. SP Mansingh Chauhan rushed to the mahant’s residence at Tulsi ghat in Bhelupur.

The manuscript has been with the family of mahant Veerbhadra Mishra, who got it 24 years after Goswami Tulsidas died in 1623.

The manuscript was kept at a Hanuman temple adjacent to the mahant family residence.

According to reports, around 12am, priest Durga Mishra locked the temple after performing the pooja. However, when he returned for the evening prayer around 3pm, he found the lock broken and the manuscript missing.
