The similarities between these twin brothers from steel city Rourkela are not just confined to their looks. Vivek and Varun Mishra both cracked this year’s IIT entrance examination. While Vivek was ranked 820, Varun has got the 216th rank. Both were born on August 14, 1990, with Vivek stepping into the world ten minutes ahead of Varun.
Their mother Madhusmita Mishra, who is a reader at a government college in Rourkela told Hindustan Times, “They did well in their studies from childhood. We have not decided where both will join. We are also apprehensive as they will be living away from home for the first time.”
Father P.K. Mishra works as an assistant general manager in the personnel department of Rourkela steel plant. Since Rourkela has a National Institute of Technology (NIT), the family will wait for the results of the NIT entrance examination. Both brothers passed Class XII this year. While Varun scored 96 per cent, Vivek scored a little less. They went to tutorial classes at an IIT coaching institute at Rourkela. “Studying together meant that they encouraged each other and they never lost the momentum,” their mother said.
While Vivek wants to study mechanical engineering at IIT, Kanpur, Varun wants to pursue electrical engineering at IIT, Kharagpur. The brothers take time off to swim and play tennis.
For IIT aspirants, the siblings’ mantra is simple: discipline, right attitude and equal emphasis on all the relevant subjects is the recipe for success.
