Two army officers killed in mysterious fire in Siachen

2 army officers were killed in a mysterious fire that destroyed a post at Siala area on the Siachen glacier.

Two army officers were killed in a mysterious fire that destroyed a forward post at Siala area on the Siachen glacier, official sources said on Sunday.

Major Sudhir Chikara of the Dogra Regiment and Captain Arun Shankar, a doctor attached to the company headquarters at the post at an latitude of over 20,000 feet, died in the fire, they said.

According to the sources, the cause of the fire, which broke out on Saturday afternoon, is yet to be ascertained. A court of enquiry has been ordered.

Most posts in Siachen are constructed with fiber material that is highly combustible but provide adequate shelter from temperatures can fall to minus 30 to minus 40 degrees Celsius in December.
